SAPI 5 Text to Speech This document contains: - About SAPI Compliant Speech Engines - Microsoft Property; Not Shareware - Important Installation Instructions - For More Information About SAPI Compliant Speech Engines ****************************************** With the release of Windows 95, Microsoft established the Speech Application Programming Interface (SAPI) standard. The SAPI standard provided a common protocol on which programs could interface with speech engines. The SAPI standard evolved through several revisions called "versions". The more recent and more stable versions are version 4.0 and version 5.0. SAPI version 4.0 is compatible with Windows 95 through XP. SAPI version 5.0 is compatible with Windows 98 through XP. According to Microsoft, the two speech engines 4.0 and 5.0 can co-exist. This is not necessarily true of earlier versions. In order for an application to use a SAPI compliant speech engine, the application and the engine must be SAPI compliant. UltraKey 3.0, UltraKey 4.0 and UltraKey 5.0 are SAPI version 4.0 compliant. UltraKey 4.0 and UltraKey 5.0 also recognize SAPI version 5.0 and use this before using version 4.0 if it is present. Recent shipments of Windows such as XP Home Edition already have a SAPI 5.0 text-to-speech engine installed. However, they may only have one voice Microsoft Sam. Voices vary in quality and ability to correctly pronounce words. "Mary" is an example of a better and more intelligent voice.
